I'm not sure if I can decide whether the fact that he fades into the background all mysteriously is cool or if it takes away from the picture a little. Like, if he stood out from the background versus blending in.. I'm not sure which I prefer but it makes me think so, yeah.

Haha, well--it's one thing to find a good tutorial and quite another to put into use what you learned in it. Give some people the same tutorial, the same tools, and the same lineart and I bet they couldn't do half as nice a job.
